[사건의내막 / 문홍철 기자] = 현대자동차가 월드랠리챔피언십(이하 WRC) 6차전으로 치러진 이탈리아 랠리에서 1-2위를 동시에 석권하며 지난 에스토니아, 터키 랠리에 이어 3연속 더블 포디움을 달성했다.

현대자동차는 9~11일 사흘간 이탈리아 사르데냐(Sardegna)에서 개최된 ‘2020 WRC’ 6차 대회에서 현대차 월드랠리팀 소속 다니 소르도(Dani Sordo) 선수가 우승을, 티에리 누빌(Thierry Neuville) 선수가 준우승을 차지하며 2020 WRC 제조사 부문 챔피언십 선두를 탈환했다고 12일(월) 밝혔다.

이로써 현대차는 역대 이탈리아 랠리에서 네 번째 우승컵(2016년, 2018~20년 우승)을 들어 올림과 동시에 2015년부터 6년 연속 연속 포디움에 오르는 대기록을 달성했다.

다니 소르도 선수는 i20 Coupe WRC 경주차와 함께 첫째 날 선두에 오른 이후 마지막 스테이지까지 단 한 차례의 역전도 허용하지 않는 완벽한 주행을 선보이며 2시간 41분 37.5초의 기록으로 이탈리아 랠리 포디움 최정상에 올랐다.

팀 동료 티에리 누빌 선수 역시 2위 자리를 두고 치열한 접전을 이어간 끝에 마지막 스테이지서 역전 준우승을 차지하며 한 편의 드라마 같은 승부를 선사했다. 3위에 머문 도요타팀의 세바스티앙 오지에 선수와의 차이는 단 1초였다.

현대차는 이번 우승과 준우승으로 단일 경기 최대포인트인 43점(1위: 25점, 2위: 18점)을 더해 208점을 쌓으며 도요타를 제치고 제조사 부문 챔피언십 선두를 탈환했다. 반면 3위와 4위를 차지한 도요타는 201점으로 2위에 내려앉았다.

이번 이탈리아 랠리에서 포디움 정상에 오른 배경에는 얇고 부드러운 모래로 덮인 현지 노면에 맞춰i20 Coupe WRC 경주차의 성능을 최적화한 점이 주요하게 작용했다. 그 결과로 현대차는 이번 대회 상위 8대의 차 중 5대나 순위에 올랐고, 이는 현대차의 강력한 주행성능을 입증하는 결과라고 볼 수 있다.

2019년 WRC 제조사 부문 종합우승을 차지한 바 있는 ‘디펜딩 챔피언’ 현대차는 이탈리아 랠리의 호성적에 힘입어 올해 WRC 2연패 달성에 한 걸음 다가갔다. 2020 WRC는 앞으로 단 두 경기만을 남겨두고 있다.

다가오는 7차전은 약 한 달 뒤인 11월 19일부터 벨기에서 치러질 예정이다.

현대팀 감독 안드레아 아다모(Andrea Adamo)는 “이탈리아에서 1위와 2위에 오름과 동시에 제조사 챔피언십 선두를 다시 차지한 것이 무엇보다 기쁘다”며 “남은 두 번의 랠리도 차질없이 준비하여 현대차의 WRC 2연패를 달성하겠다”고 포부를 말했다.

WTCR에서도 승전보, 3차 대회 슬로바키아전 세 번째 결승 레이스에서 우승

현대차의 판매용 경주차 i30 N TCR은 같은 기간 슬로베키아의 슬로베키아 링(Slovakia Ring) 서킷에서 개최된 2020 WTCR 3차 대회 세 번의 레이스 중 세 번째 결승 레이스에서 우승을 차지했다.

WTCR은 아우디, 폭스바겐, 혼다 등 제조사별 C세그먼트의 고성능 경주차가 대거 참가하는 글로벌 최정상급 투어링카 대회다.

올해 대회는 코로나19 감염위험으로 인해 일정이 축소됐으며, 유럽 6개국에서 대회마다 총 2~3번의 결승 레이스를 펼친다. 그 결과 연간 총 16번의 결승 레이스 결과를 합산해 해당 연도의 종합 우승팀과 우승 드라이버를 결정한다.

이번 3차 대회 세 번째 결승 레이스에서 엥슬러 현대 N 리퀴몰리 레이싱팀의 니키 캐츠버그(Nicky Catsburg)선수가 1위를 차지했으며 같은 대회 첫 번째 결승 레이스에서는 BRC 현대 N 루크오일 스쿼드라 코르세팀의 가브리엘 타퀴니(Gabriele Tarquini) 선수가 준우승을 기록했다.

현대차의 i30 N TCR은 WTCR이 출범한 원년인 2018년 드라이버 부문과 팀 부문 종합 우승을 차지한 바 있으며, 2019년에도 드라이버 부문 2연패를 거머쥔 바 있다.

한편 현대차는 현대모비스, 현대제철, 이노션월드와이드 등 현대자동차그룹 주요 계열사뿐만 아니라 쉘, 한온시스템, 유코카캐리어스와 같은 글로벌 기업들과의 적극적인 파트너십을 바탕으로 WRC를 포함한 세계 최정상급 모터스포츠 무대 위에서 도전을 계속해오고 있다.

Hyundai Motors World Rally Team wins the 2020 WRC Italy Rally

Dani Sordo took the lead with the i20 Coupe WRC race car on the first day and then performed a perfect run that did not allow a single reverse until the last stage, reaching the top of the Italian Rally Podium with a record of 2 hours, 41 minutes and 37.5 seconds.

 

Team-mate Thierry Neuville also held a fierce battle for the second place, and took a turnaround in the last stage and presented a drama-like game. The difference from Toyota's Sebastien Ozzie, who stayed in third place, was only one second.

 

With this win and runner-up, Hyundai Motor recaptured the top of the Manufacturers Championship by adding 43 points (1st place: 25 points, 2nd place: 18 points), which is the largest point in a single game, to 208 points, overtaking Toyota. On the other hand, Toyota, which took 3rd and 4th place, fell to 2nd place with 201 points.

 

In the background of reaching the top of the Podium at the Italian rally, the performance of the i20 Coupe WRC race car was optimized to match the local road covered with thin and soft sand. As a result, Hyundai Motor Company was ranked 5 out of the top 8 cars in this competition, which can be seen as a result of demonstrating the strong driving performance of Hyundai Motor Company.

 

Hyundai Motor Company, the “defending champion,” who won the overall victory in the WRC manufacturing sector in 2019, has stepped closer to achieving the WRC 2nd straight victory this year thanks to the favorable performance of the Italian rally. The 2020 WRC has only two games left.

Hyundai Motor's i30 N TCR won the overall championship in the driver and team divisions in 2018, the first year of the WTCR's launch, and also won a second straight victory in the driver division in 2019.
