7일 국가보훈처에 따르면 미국 해병대로 6·25전쟁에 참전한 짐 란츠 참전용사가 전쟁 당시 자신에게 태극기를 전해 준 한국 해병대원을 찾고 있다.

 

짐 란츠 참전용사는 지난 4월 주 로스앤젤레스 총영사관을 통해 ‘평화의 사도’ 메달을 수여받으면서 70여 년간 간직한 태극기를 소개하고 이를 건네 준 한국 해병대원을 찾고 싶다는 사연을 전했다.

 

이에 주 로스앤젤레스 총영사관과 보훈처는 함께 영상을 제작, ‘태극기 한국 해병대원 찾기 캠페인’을 추진하기로 했다.

 

짐 란츠 참전용사는 1950년 11월부터 1951년 11월까지 미국 해병대로 6·25전쟁에 참전했다. 일본을 경유해 원산항에 입항 후 장진호를 거쳐 1951년 봄 대구에 머물렀을 당시 만났던 한국 해병대원을 찾고 있다.

 

짐 란츠 참전용사는 영상에서 “대구에서 2주 정도 머무른 뒤 다른 곳으로 이동할 때 그가 나에게 선물을 주고 싶다며 가방에서 한국 국기를 꺼내 줬다”며 “그 태극기를 지난 71년간 참전의 경험을 기억하는 기념품으로 간직했다. 그 분께 미국 국기를 주지 못한 게 안타깝다”고 전했다.
