At the GS Caltex Yeosu plant on the 28th, the two companies attended the presence of LG Chem Vice Chairman Shin Hak-cheol, GS Caltex President Huh Se-hong, Yeosu Mayor Jeong Ki-myeong, and R&D personnel from both companies, and 3HP (3-Hydroxypropionic acid: 3HP, a key raw material for eco-friendly materials such as biodegradable plastics) -Hydroxypropionic acid) Held a groundbreaking ceremony for a demonstration plant for prototype production.
3HP is a bio raw material produced through an eco-friendly fermentation process and is used as raw material for acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, and biodegradable materials. It is a highly rated material. In November of last year, the two companies signed a joint development agreement (JDA) to develop 3HP mass production technology and produce prototypes.
The two companies plan to build a 3HP demonstration plant at GS Caltex's Yeosu plant by 2023 and produce prototypes. Afterwards, it plans to accelerate its entry into the biodegradable material and various bioplastic markets through commercialization.
The construction of this demonstration plant is meaningful in that the two companies will actively promote the high value-added eco-friendly biochemical business through synergy between LG Chem's fermentation source technology and GS Caltex's separation and purification process scale-up technology. There have been attempts to develop 3HP technology around the world, but there has been no commercial or commercialized case yet.
On this day, LG Chem and GS Caltex signed an MOU for technology development of 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BDO), which is used as an eco-friendly raw material for manufacturing biodegradable materials and polyurethane in addition to 3HP. Through this, the two companies will cooperate in the overall white bio field and actively discuss ways to realize a sustainable bio ecosystem.
In addition, Yeosu City, LG Chem, and GS Caltex signed a three-party MOU for the development of the domestic white bio industry and vitalization of a carbon-neutral and circular economy. Through this agreement, the city of Yeosu decided to spare no administrative support so that this demonstration project could proceed smoothly, and both companies decided to review Yeosu as a site for a new factory when promoting commercialization in the future.
LG Chem Vice Chairman Shin Hak-cheol said, “It is very meaningful that Korea’s leading oil and chemical companies have joined hands for a sustainable future. We will continue to strengthen our collaboration,” he said.
