Choo Kyung-ho “Additional investment of 12 billion won to ease the burden of export logistics costs”

Government, industry-specific associations, organizations, and related institutions to check import and export trends

[Introduction to the case / Reporter Hong-cheol Moon] = The government has decided to expand the supply of trade finance to a maximum of 351 trillion won this year and to provide additional support of 12 billion won to alleviate the burden of logistics costs. This is due to the continued trade deficit due to slowing exports and an increase in energy imports.

On the 21st, the government held a meeting to check import and export trends at the government complex in Seoul, presided over by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance Choo Kyung-ho, attended by relevant ministries, major industry associations and organizations, and related institutions.

Deputy Prime Minister Choo Kyung-ho said, “The trade deficit with China has slightly decreased from the previous few months thanks to the improvement of the trade surplus with China from the 1st to 20th of this month, but risks of export restrictions centered on semiconductors and China remain and energy price volatility is high. A close inspection is necessary,” he said.

Accordingly, the government plans to expand the supply of trade finance to a maximum of 351 trillion won this year to boost export vitality, and to use the reserve funds to provide additional support as soon as possible to alleviate the burden of logistics costs, which is a major problem in the field.

Deputy Prime Minister Choo Kyung-ho also predicted, “We will prepare measures to strengthen competitiveness in shipbuilding and secondary batteries, artificial intelligence (AI) robots, and future mobility sequentially.”

He also promised to come up with measures to stabilize the global supply chain.

Deputy Prime Minister Choo Kyung-ho explained, “We will examine supply chain risk factors for each key sector and devise countermeasures for the growing uncertainty due to the recent reorganization of global supply chains such as semiconductors, rechargeable batteries, and automobiles.”

At the same time, the government plans to strengthen the ability to win core projects jointly with the public and private sectors to revitalize overseas infrastructure orders, and actively promote R&D investment and policy financial support.

To cope with the deficit in the tourism account due to the expansion of overseas tourism, various measures such as revitalization of Korean tourism using K-contents, domestic travel support for Koreans, and revitalization of medical tourism will be prepared.

Deputy Prime Minister Choo Kyung-ho said, "As uncertainties in energy supply and demand and prices are high in the future, we will soon come up with a plan for energy conservation and efficiency improvement so that trade balance volatility can be reduced."
