LNG and LPG Quota Tariffs to be Lowered to 0% in Second Half… Monitoring of Consumer Cost Prices via AI
Citizen Cost Price Task Force Meeting… Diesel Subsidies Extended Until End of September
7th Oil Record High: "Discussion and Review of Oil Price Trends and Consumer Livelihood Issues"
'Measures to Stabilize Consumer Cost Prices and Reduce Burden on Ordinary Citizens' to be Announced Soon
[Inside Story / Reporter Park Yeon-pa] = Starting in the second half of the year, the government will lower the quota tariff rates on LNG, LPG, and crude oil for LPG production to 0%, and reduce the individual consumption tax on LNG for power generation by 15%. In addition, the government will extend the diesel price-linked subsidy for freight and passenger transport until the end of September and expand support to include chartered buses.
Furthermore, the government will enhance supply and demand and price prediction models for food and daily necessities based on AI, and will establish an 'Economical Consumption App' during the second half of the year that provides real-time price and discount information by retailer. On the 18th, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economy Koo Yun-chul presided over the 11th meeting of the Ministerial Task Force for Special Management of People's Living Prices. During the meeting, discussions covered "measures to stabilize people's living prices and alleviate the burden on ordinary citizens," the "7th proposal for designating a maximum oil price," "operational plans for tariff quotas in the second half of the year," "measures to strengthen AI-based continuous monitoring of people's living prices," and "trends and management plans for local public utility rates in the second half of the year."
In his opening remarks, Deputy Prime Minister Koo stated, "While geopolitical risks appear to be easing somewhat, such as with falling international oil prices following the conclusion of peace talks in the Middle East, it is expected that it will take some time for international energy production and transportation infrastructure and logistics supply chains to fully normalize." He continued, "The government will not let its guard down for even a moment and will respond by mobilizing all available means to stabilize the cost of living." He added, "In particular, to alleviate the burden of fuel costs on the transportation industry, we will extend the diesel price-linked subsidies for freight and passenger transport, which are scheduled to end at the end of June, until the end of September, and expand the scope of support to include chartered buses."
Regarding measures to stabilize the cost of living and reduce the burden on ordinary citizens, he stated, "Along with comprehensive price stabilization measures such as discount support, increased supply, and tariff quotas, we will announce plans to minimize the burden on the livelihoods of ordinary citizens and vulnerable groups as soon as possible."
Regarding the designation of the 7th oil price ceiling, he stated, "We will discuss and review the contents of the Memorandum of Understanding on the End of the Middle East War, domestic and international oil price trends, as well as the burden on the livelihoods of the people and fiscal burdens."
In addition, regarding the operation of tariff quotas, the statement added, "Starting in the second half of the year, we will lower the tariff quota rates for LNG, LPG, and crude oil for LPG production to 0% and reduce the individual consumption tax on LNG for power generation by 15%. We will also extend the 25% fuel tax reduction measure for LPG butane, a fuel for the working class, for one month until the end of July."
Furthermore, it stated, "We will extend tariff quotas for three types of imported fruits, including bananas, and 10 types of food ingredients, such as processed egg products. We will also apply new tariff quotas to nine types of food and feed ingredients, supporting a total of 49 items in addition to the existing 27." The statement continued, "We will strengthen inspections at the import and distribution stages to ensure that the effects of tariff rate reductions are fully reflected in consumer prices."
Meanwhile, to prepare for rapidly changing domestic and international conditions, such as geopolitical risks and abnormal weather, the system for continuous monitoring of consumer prices using AI will be strengthened to ensure more preemptive and sophisticated price management. Deputy Prime Minister Koo stated, "We will establish a system utilizing AI to collect and analyze price trends for key consumer goods, such as food and daily necessities, across production and distribution stages, and enhance supply and demand and price forecasting models." He added, "In the second half of the year, we will launch a 'Smart Consumption App' that citizens can directly use to provide real-time price and discount information by retailer, thereby expanding consumer choices and supporting rational consumption."
Furthermore, the policy is to manage local public utility rates in the second half of the year under a policy of freezing them as much as possible, given the upward pressure from rising energy prices.
Deputy Prime Minister Koo emphasized, "We will actively cooperate with local governments, led by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, to defer and disperse the timing of public utility rate hikes and minimize increases." He added, "We will also actively provide financial support, such as special grants, to outstanding local governments that strive for price stability."
